Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a talented Senior Systems Engineer (AWS Data Engineer) to lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization. This 100% remote, full-time role supports the VA, requiring strong AWS data architecture and SQL skills to deliver scalable reporting capabilities.

You will evaluate AWS data services, design migration paths from MSSQL/XML, build data catalogs, and collaborate with back-end developers to ensure seamless data flows and compliant,

Qualifications

• 8+ years in software or data engineering with AWS focus.
• Experience migrating cloud data platforms in enterprise/healthcare.
• Experience selecting AWS data services for reporting needs.
• Experience delivering analytics for non-technical users.
• Hands-on AWS data services: S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch.
• Strong SQL to design relational queries over XML/JSON.
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores at scale.
• Ability to evaluate trade-offs across AWS data services by cost and performance.
• Familiarity with AWS analytics tools (Athena, QuickSight, Redshift).
• Proficient Git and CI/CD with AWS tooling.

Responsibilities

• Lead healthcare data platform modernization.
• Evolve MSSQL/XML object store to cloud-native AWS data architecture.
• Evaluate AWS data strategies for platform.
• Recommend AWS data storage and query architectures (S3+Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch).
• Design reporting layer for SQL queries by business users.
• Plan migration of XML object store data to AWS.
• Build AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
• Tune query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting needs.
• Coordinate with .NET developers for data pipelines.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines for data infra.
• Apply IaC using CDK/CloudFormation/Terraform.
• Document architecture decisions and data dictionaries.
