Syms Strategic Group, LLC is seeking a talented Senior Systems Engineer (AWS Data Engineer) - II to lead the next phase of the healthcare data platform modernization. This remote role supports the Veterans Affairs department, focusing on designing cloud-native AWS data architectures and enabling SQL-based reporting for business users.

The ideal candidate has 8+ years in software or data engineering with strong AWS experience, hands-on skills across S3, Athena, Glue, Redshift, and CI/CD tooling,

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in software or data engineering with strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience migrating cloud data platforms in production environments.
• Experience selecting AWS data services to meet reporting needs.
• Ability to deliver reporting solutions for non-technical users.
• Strong SQL for relational queries over XML/JSON data.
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores and transformations.
• Familiarity with BI tools (Athena, QuickSight, Redshift) or equivalents.
• Experience with Git and CI/CD in AWS environments.
• Excellent communication of technical trade-offs to stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead the next phase of the healthcare data platform modernization.
• Implement the evolution to a scalable, cloud-native AWS data architecture.
• Evaluate and decide the right AWS data strategy for the platform.
• Design and build the reporting and query layer for relational SQL queries.
• Architect the migration path for XML object store data into AWS.
• Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to translate requirements into data models.
• Work with back-end engineers to ensure data flows from EDI pipelines into the data layer.
• Apply IaC practices using CDK/CloudFormation/Terraform.
