Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) seeks a Senior Systems Engineer to modernize a healthcare data platform on AWS. You will architect and implement data pipelines, migrate XML data into a scalable cloud-native system, and enable SQL-based reporting for business stakeholders.

Required is deep AWS experience, data architecture skills, and experience with XML data stores. This is a remote, U.S.-based role supporting Veterans Affairs with a W-2 arrangement.

Qualifications

• 8+ years’ experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience architecting and executing cloud data platform migrations in production environments.
• Experience delivering analytics solutions for non-technical users.
• Hands-on AWS data services across S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, and more.
• Familiarity with XML-heavy data stores and SQL-based reporting.

Responsibilities

• Lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization.
• Design and implement AWS-native data architectures for SQL-based reporting.
• Evaluate AWS data strategies and storage options (S3+Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift).
• Build reporting layers for business users to run relational SQL queries.
• Architect XML object store migration from MSSQL into AWS.
• Maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting requirements into data models.
• Coordinate with .NET engineers to pipeline data from EDI processing into the new layer.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines using AWS tooling and IaC practices.
