Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer (AWS Data Engineer) II for a remote, US-based role focused on modernizing a healthcare data platform for the Veterans Affairs project. The role requires leading architecture decisions, migrating XML data to a cloud-native AWS stack, and delivering SQL-based reporting capabilities.

You will work with stakeholders to define data models, optimize performance and cost, and collaborate with a .NET backend team.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience architecting and executing cloud data platform migrations in enterprise or healthcare environments.
• Track record of evaluating and selecting AWS data services to meet reporting and query requirements.
• Experience delivering reporting or analytics solutions for non-technical business users.
• Deep hands-on AWS experience across data services – S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch.

Responsibilities

• Lead the healthcare data platform modernization effort.
• Architect AWS data architecture and migration from MSSQL XML object store to cloud-native AWS platform.
• Design and build the reporting and query layer for relational SQL queries on healthcare data.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders, analysts, and a back-end C#/.Net team to ensure data flows seamlessly.
