Syms Strategic Group (SSG) seeks a Senior Systems Engineer (AWS Data Engineer) II for a remote U.S.-based position in the Veterans Affairs portfolio. You will lead the healthcare data platform modernization and craft scalable, cloud-native AWS architectures to enable fast SQL-based reporting.

Required 8+ years in AWS-focused software or data engineering, with experience migrating cloud data platforms, evaluating AWS data services, and delivering analytics for non-technical users.

Qualifications

• 8+ years’ experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience architecting and executing cloud data platform migrations in production environments.
• Track record of evaluating AWS data services to meet reporting and query needs.
• Experience delivering analytics solutions for non-technical users.
• Hands-on AWS data services expertise across S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch.
• Strong SQL for relational querying over XML/JSON.
• Experience parsing XML-heavy data stores at scale.
• Familiarity with BI tools and AWS analytics (Athena, QuickSight, Redshift).
• Proficiency with Git, CI/CD, and AWS-native tooling (CodePipeline/CodeBuild/CodeDeploy).
• IaC experience with CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform.

Responsibilities

• Lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization.
• Evolve to a scalable, cloud-native AWS data architecture for SQL-based reporting.
• Evaluate and decide AWS data strategy for the platform.
• Recommend optimal AWS data storage and query architectures (S3+Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch).
• Design and build a reporting layer for SQL queries by business users.
• Architect XML object store migration from MSSQL to the AWS platform.
• Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting needs into data models and patterns.
• Work with .NET engineers to ensure data flow from EDI pipelines into the new layer.
