Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer focused on AWS Data Engineering to lead modernization of the healthcare data platform from MSSQL/XML towards a scalable, cloud-native AWS architecture.

You will evaluate AWS data strategies, design efficient storage and query layers, and work with stakeholders and a .NET team to deliver performant, SQL-based reporting. This is a 100% U.S.-based remote role requiring US citizenship/clearance readiness.

Qualifications

• 8+ years’ experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience architecting and executing cloud data platform migrations in enterprise/healthcare.
• Track record of evaluating and selecting AWS data services for reporting requirements.
• Experience delivering reporting/analytics solutions for non-technical users.
• Hands-on AWS data services: S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch.
• Strong SQL skills for relational queries over XML/JSON.
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores – parsing and transforming XML at scale.
• Familiarity with BI tooling like Athena/QuickSight/Redshift.
• Proficiency with Git/GitHub and CI/CD tools (CodePipeline/CodeBuild/CodeDeploy).
• IaC experience (CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform).
• Strong ability to communicate architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience translating business requirements into technical data models.
• Comfort driving ambiguous architecture decisions to resolution.
• Experience with Agile (Scrum/Kanban) and JIRA.
• Strong documentation habits (diagrams, data dictionaries, runbooks).

Responsibilities

• Lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization.
• Evolve to a cloud-native AWS data architecture for SQL-based reports and queries.
• Evaluate and decide AWS data strategy for the platform.
• Recommend optimal AWS-native storage and query architectures (S3+Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch).
• Design and build reporting/query layer for SQL queries by business users.
• Architect XML object store migration to AWS platform with optimal formats and partitioning.
• Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting needs into data models.
• Coordinate with back-end C#/.Net for data flow from EDI to new data layer.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines using AWS tooling.
• Apply IaC practices with CDK/CloudFormation/Terraform.
• Document architecture decisions and data flows clearly.
