Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a talented Senior Systems Engineer (AWS Data Engineer) - II for a remote, full-time role supporting the Veterans Affairs department. A strong AWS background and healthcare data experience are required.

You will design cloud-native AWS data architectures, migrate XML object stores from MSSQL, create scalable reporting layers, optimize cost and performance, and collaborate with business stakeholders and a .NET backend to ensure seamless data flows.

Qualifications

• 8+ years’ experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Experience architecting cloud data migrations in production environments.
• Ability to evaluate AWS data services to meet reporting needs.
• Experience delivering analytics for non-technical users.
• Hands-on AWS data services: S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch.
• Strong SQL skills for relational layers over XML/JSON.
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores.
• Familiarity with AWS analytics/BI tools (Athena, QuickSight, Redshift).
• Proficiency with Git/GitHub and CI/CD tooling.
• IaC experience (CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform).
• Ability to communicate architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience gathering business reporting requirements and translating to data models.
• Agile experience (Scrum/Kanban) and JIRA.
• Excellent documentation habits.

Responsibilities

• Lead the healthcare data platform modernization.
• Architect AWS data strategy and storage/query architecture (XML object store migration).
• Design reporting layers for SQL-based access by business users.
• Build AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with stakeholders and a .NET backend to ensure data flows.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines for data infrastructure using AWS tools.
• IaC implementation using CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform.
• Document architecture decisions, data flows, and data dictionaries.
