Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to drive the modernization of a healthcare data platform on AWS. The role focuses on designing scalable, cloud-native data architecture and enabling fast, SQL-based reporting for business users.

Responsibilities include migrating XML object stores to AWS, building data catalogs and metadata, and delivering cost-effective query performance across services like S3, Athena, and Redshift.

Qualifications

• 8+ years’ experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience architecting and executing cloud data platform migrations in production environments.
• Track record of evaluating and selecting AWS data services to meet reporting needs.
• Experience delivering reporting or analytics solutions for non-technical users.
• Hands-on AWS experience across data services (S3, Athena, Glue, etc.).
• Strong SQL and relational querying over semi-structured data (XML, JSON).
• Familiarity with XML-heavy data stores and migration efforts.
• Knowledge of HIPAA/compliant cloud data architectures.

Responsibilities

• Lead the next phase of the healthcare data platform modernization.
• Design and implement scalable AWS-native data architecture for reporting and analytics.
• Architect migrations from MSSQL XML stores to AWS data platforms.
• Build and maintain data catalogs, schemas, and metadata for discoverability.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting needs into data models and queries.
• Develop CI/CD pipelines for data infrastructure using AWS tooling.
• Apply IaC practices using CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform.
• Document architecture decisions and data flows clearly.
