Job summary

Southern Archaeological Research, LLC. is seeking a Senior Archaeologist to support a range of projects across the United States. The position is remote or based from our offices in Orlando, Jacksonville, Pensacola, or New Orleans.

The candidate will lead field teams, supervise Phase I-III studies, prepare high-quality technical reports, and ensure compliance with NRHP/NEPA guidelines. Strong writing skills and ability to obtain security clearance are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field.
• Completion of an accredited archaeological field school, six months of field experience, or both.
• Minimum five years of professional archaeological field experience encompassing some supervisory experience.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Ability to obtain government security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Identify and target locations of enhanced site probability based on features.
• Administer the project health and safety plan and assist in improving safety.
• Understand the research design and ensure its implementation.
• Revise field methodology with project leadership.
• Prepare maps and field staff summaries.
• Provide leadership to field teams during monitoring, survey, testing, and excavation.
• Record field notes, maps, drawings, logs, forms, and databases.
• Inventory artifacts, ecofacts, and samples.
• Identify potential human remains and handle respectfully.
• Perform quality control of field data.
• Use GPS, Field Maps, and GIS tools to document progress.
• Photo-document artifacts and sites and maintain logs.
• Review GIS data for interpretation.
• Prepare preliminary evaluations of archaeological resources under NRHP.
• Provide daily updates to PI or PM.
• Meet with landowners, clients, and regulatory staff.
• Interview informants to gather history information.
• Prepare thorough technical reports and quality control.
• Assist PI/PM with other research and admin tasks.
• Prepare research permit applications and proposals.
• Procure and maintain field equipment and report issues.
• Complete timesheets and maintain compliance with SEARCH guidelines.
