Job summary

Ensono seeks a Lead Application Modernization Consultant to guide agile delivery teams and own the modernization of large, complex applications. You’ll stay hands-on across architecture, design, and development while driving measurable business outcomes for clients.

You will advance connected services standards, engage in discovery, assessments, and pre-sales, and mentor engineers in modern practices, including AI-assisted development. This role supports remote work in the United States.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of progressive software engineering, including 3+ years in modernising applications and delivering cloud architectures.
• Experience leading modernization of large-scale, high-availability apps across cloud-native and microservices stacks.
• Hands-on in Java/.NET/Python with ability to analyse legacy codebases.
• Experience assessing legacy estates, inventories, and modernization strategies (rehost, refactor, re-platform, retire, retain, replace).
• Experience leading solution design translating requirements into architectures, ADRs, acceptance criteria and delivery plans.
• Experience designing distributed systems on Azure/AWS/GCP with attention to scalability, availability and non-functional needs.
• Experience establishing engineering standards including automation, testing, documentation and quality gates.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools to support code analysis, development, testing, or modernization.
• Experience coaching/mentoring engineers and owning technical outcomes with transparent documentation.
• Strong client-facing communication to guide technical direction and align teams.
• Proven ownership of reusable engineering assets and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Lead an agile delivery team or significant workstream, ensuring measurable business outcomes.
• Own technical and delivery risk, mitigating legacy and new-technology risks.
• Remain hands-on in architecture, design, and development while supervising multiple work packages.
• Drive modernization by assessing codebases and recommending strategies (rehost/refactor/re-platform/retire/retain/replace).
• Develop target-state designs showing a clear path from legacy to modernized solutions.
• Lead discovery and planning with clients defining problems, outcomes, success criteria and priorities.
• Document requirements, ADRs, acceptance criteria, and non-functional expectations clearly.
• Promote a modern developer experience and responsible use of AI-assisted tools.
• Maintain engineering judgment and transparent architecture decisions.
• Provide technical leadership within Connected Services and mentor engineers.
