Job summary

CVS Health is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead API platform design, governance, and multi-team execution across enterprise APIs. You will shape REST/GraphQL/event-driven interfaces and drive secure, scalable delivery for cloud and on‑prem environments.

You will guide AI‑powered tooling within the developer experience, architect MCP-like catalog components, and mentor engineers to align with CVS Health goals and standards.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience designing and delivering APIs at enterprise scale.
• 5+ years of direct experience with API security (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, mTLS, rate limiting, threat modeling).
• 5+ years of experience with API gateway products and management platforms (e.g., Apigee, Kong, Azure APIM).
• 5+ years of backend development in Java/Spring Boot and/or Node.js.
• 5+ years working with large public cloud platforms (GCP/AWS/Azure).
• 3+ years influencing technical direction across multiple teams at senior capacity.
• 3+ years partnering with product/architecture/program mgmt to shape roadmaps.
• Experience building or operating an API catalog, developer portal, or internal platform.
• Experience with GraphQL schema design and federation at scale.
• Mature CI/CD practices, testing, and contract-first API development

Responsibilities

• Define standards for REST, GraphQL, event-driven, and MCP-based interfaces across the enterprise.
• Govern API lifecycle from specification to retirement and versioning.
• Architect systems delivering APIs and integrations to multi-environment targets (cloud and on-prem).
• Lead API gateway, service mesh, and infrastructure concerns for reliable, high-throughput delivery.
• Embed AI-powered capabilities into the developer platform and API tooling.
• Mentor engineers, participate in architecture reviews, and drive platform strategy across teams.
