Job summary

CVS Health is building a cross-team API platform to design, secure, and publish APIs across Retail, Pharmacy, Health Solutions, and Aetna. The Principal Engineer will shape the technical direction, govern API standards, and drive enterprise-scale API delivery from internal catalog to external developer experiences.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience with API design at enterprise scale.
• 5+ years of API security experience (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, mTLS, rate limiting).
• 5+ years working with API gateway products and API management platforms (e.g., Apigee, Kong, Azure APIM).
• 5+ years backend development in Java/Spring Boot and/or Node.js.
• 5+ years experience with large public cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure).
• 3+ years influencing technical direction across multiple teams at architect level.
• 3+ years partnering with product management to shape roadmaps for platform capabilities.
• Experience building or operating an API catalog, developer portal, and internal platform.
• Experience with GraphQL schema design and federation at scale.
• Mature CI/CD practices, tests, and contract-first API development.

Responsibilities

• Define and govern REST, GraphQL, event-driven, and MCP-based interfaces for enterprise APIs.
• Lead API life cycle management from design to retirement and versioning.
• Architect delivery of APIs and integrations across multi-environment targets (cloud and on-premises).
• Establish API catalog governance, taxonomy, and ownership models.
• Embed AI-powered capabilities into the developer experience and platform tooling.
