Job summary

AIOS in San Francisco is seeking an AI Engineering Lead to build the AIOS Agent SDK and enable world-class agents across the company. You will own architecture, runtime, and safety practices, balancing performance, cost, and reliability while guiding a growing Applied AI team.

You’ll work with product and clinical teams to design robust agent platforms, ensure compliance, and drive production readiness, with reporting lines to the VP of Engineering.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience and active production contributor.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or closely related field.
• Produced and shipped an exceptional agentic system used by real customers with multi-step reasoning and tool usage.
• Experience with agent architecture including context, retrieval, memory, state, and orchestration.
• Experience with evaluation systems for probabilistic products and differentiating offline vs production performance.
• Strong systems-engineering fundamentals: APIs, distributed systems, observability, failure modes, and reliability.
• Knowledge of safe agent actions: authorization, validation, idempotency, auditability, recovery, escalation.
• Open-weight models: ability to lead fine-tuning and deployment when appropriate.
• Proven leadership of a small engineering team and ability to set direction and raise quality.
• Excellent communication to engineers, product leaders, clinicians, and executives.

Responsibilities

• Turn Jesse’s customer support tool harness into the internal platform powering AIOS agents and define its architecture, primitives, extension points, developer experience, and integration.
• Own Jesse and Aegis systems, improving both while extracting shared foundations for context, retrieval, memory, orchestration, tools, state, and escalation.
• Build trustworthy benchmarks and establish paths from offline evaluation to controlled production experiments so changes ship with evidence.
• Turn traces and incidents into better evals, architecture, models, and platform capabilities.
• Ensure safety and compliance through authorization, validation, idempotency, auditability, and regional requirements.
• Lead model selection, routing, fallbacks, caching, and management of monthly model spend; oversee fine-tuning and deployment of open-weight models as needed.
• Own shared runtime in production, with tracing, observability, testing, capacity, and incident response; set AI architecture strategy with VP of Engineering.
• Build and lead the Applied AI team, manage external model providers, and represent AIOS externally when beneficial.
