Job summary

Groundswell is seeking an experienced engineer to translate business problems into technical AI-enabled capabilities, from discovery to deployment, with hands-on ownership.

You will own capabilities end to end, including discovery conversations, design, build, evaluation, and operation after release. You will mentor engineers new to AI and maintain current knowledge of models, tooling, and techniques while guiding architecture decisions.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building and shipping production software.
• At least 1 year of hands-on experience building applications that integrate large language models, including prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, structured extraction, tool use, and agent patterns.
• Demonstrated ability to own a capability end to end, from an ambiguous requirement through to something in production that people rely on.
• Demonstrated experience evaluating AI system quality, including building test sets, defining metrics, and making deployment decisions based on evidence.
• Strong programming ability in Python, TypeScript, or SQL, across the full application.
• Proven ability to lead requirements conversations with non-technical stakeholders and translate into a technical approach.
• Sound judgment on tradeoffs between accuracy, cost, latency, and complexity, with ability to explain to engineers and executives.
• Excellent written communication.
• Ability to work independently through ambiguous requirements and drive delivery with minimal direction.
• Willingness to teach and develop others.
• U.S. Citizenship required for federal engagements.

Responsibilities

• Lead requirements conversations with business and technical stakeholders.
• Define the technical approach and defend it; select the AI pattern appropriate to the problem.
• Recommend against AI when a simpler solution is right.
• Define measurable success criteria before building.
• Build the complete capability, including prompts, retrieval, UI, and integration.
• Build evaluation sets from real data and iterate based on results.
• Make architecture decisions considering quality, cost, latency, security, and authorization.
• Operationalize capabilities with governance, logging, and drift monitoring.
• Help clients understand possibilities and shape the next phase of work.
• Mentor engineers new to AI through code review and guidance.
• Maintain knowledge of models, tooling, and reusable patterns.
• Move between client delivery, internal product work, and proofs of concept.
