Job summary

Groundswell is seeking an experienced AI Engineer to own AI-enabled capabilities end-to-end, from discovery and design to deployment and governance. You will mentor engineers, evaluate AI systems, and ensure practical application of patterns beyond mere model performance.

You will work across client delivery, internal products, and rapid proofs of concept while maintaining current knowledge of AI tooling and ensuring clear client-facing documentation.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building and shipping production software.
• At least 1 year hands-on experience building applications that integrate large language models including prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, structured extraction, tool use, and agent patterns.
• Own a capability end to end from ambiguous requirement to production.
• Experience evaluating AI system quality with test sets, metrics, and deployment decisions.
• Strong programming ability in Python, TypeScript, or SQL across the full application.
• Lead requirements conversations with non-technical stakeholders and translate into technical approach.
• Explain tradeoffs between accuracy, cost, latency, and complexity to engineers and executives.
• Excellent written communication for client-facing documentation and design rationale.
• Able to work independently through ambiguous requirements and drive delivery.
• Willingness to teach and develop others.
• U.S. Citizenship required.

Responsibilities

• Lead requirements conversations with business and technical stakeholders covering workflow, decisions, and constraints.
• Define the technical approach and defend it, selecting the AI pattern best suited to the problem.
• Recommend against AI when simpler solutions exist and identify process improvements.
• Define measurable success criteria including accuracy targets and acceptance conditions.
• Build the complete capability end-to-end, including prompts, retrieval, APIs, data handling, and UI.
• Develop evaluation sets from real data and iterate based on results.
• Make architecture decisions considering quality, cost, latency, security, and authorization.
• Operationalize capabilities in client environments with governance and monitoring.
• Educate clients on possibilities and shape future work through proofs of concept.
• Mentor engineers new to AI through code reviews and guidance.
• Keep current knowledge of models, tooling, and reusable patterns.
• Move between client delivery, internal product work, and enablement as needed.
• Produce documentation detailing solution, limitations, validation, and failure handling.
