Job summary

Groundswell, a premier technology integrator serving federal agencies, seeks an AI-enabled software engineer to own capabilities end-to-end—from discovery to production. You’ll decide when AI is right, design the approach, and deliver measurable results with strong governance.

You’ll mentor peers, work with engineers, executives, and end users, and keep current on models, tooling, and observability. Expect an environment where leadership, rigor, and client impact come first.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building and shipping production software.
• Hands-on experience integrating large language models with prompt engineering and retrieval.
• Ability to own a capability end to end from ambiguity to production.
• Experience evaluating AI systems with test sets and metrics.
• Strong programming ability in Python, TypeScript or SQL across the full app.
• Lead requirements conversations with non-technical stakeholders.
• Judgment on accuracy, cost, latency, and complexity.
• Excellent written communication for client-facing documentation.
• Ability to work independently in ambiguous situations.
• Willingness to teach and mentor others.
• U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Lead requirements conversations with business and technical stakeholders.
• Define technical approach and defend the AI pattern selection.
• Recommend against AI when simpler solutions exist.
• Define measurable success criteria before building.
• Build complete capability with prompts, retrieval, and UI.
• Create evaluation sets and iterate based on results.
• Make architecture decisions balancing quality, cost, latency, and security.
• Operationalize capabilities with governance, logging, and monitoring.
• Mentor engineers new to AI through guidance and code reviews.
• Maintain current knowledge of models, tooling, and techniques.
• Move between client delivery and product work as needed.
• Produce clear documentation including limitations and validation.
