Job summary

Groundswell is seeking an experienced ML/AI engineer to own capabilities end to end, from discovery through deployment and operation. You will work with engineers, executives, and end users to translate business problems into technical solutions, choosing appropriate AI patterns and ensuring measurable success.

You will evaluate AI system quality, build complete capabilities, and mentor others while maintaining current knowledge of models and tooling.

Qualifications

• 4+ years building and shipping production software.
• At least 1 year of hands-on experience with large language models and related patterns.
• Ability to own a capability end to end from ambiguous requirement to production.
• Experience evaluating AI system quality with metrics and evidence.
• Strong programming ability in Python/TypeScript/SQL across the full app.
• Ability to lead requirements conversations with non-technical stakeholders.
• Sound judgment on tradeoffs between accuracy, cost, latency, and complexity.
• Excellent written communication for client-facing docs and rationale.
• Ability to work independently through ambiguity and deliver with minimal direction.
• Willingness to teach and develop others.
• U.S. Citizenship required for client engagements.

Responsibilities

• Lead requirements conversations with business and technical stakeholders to cover workflow, decisions, and acceptance criteria.
• Define the technical approach and defend the AI pattern chosen for the problem.
• Recommend simpler non-AI solutions when appropriate, including rules and interfaces.
• Define measurable success criteria before building, including accuracy targets and thresholds.
• Build the complete capability end-to-end: prompt design, retrieval, APIs, data handling, and UI.
• Create evaluation sets and measure results; iterate based on evidence.
• Make architecture decisions considering quality, cost, latency, security, and authorization.
• Operationalize capabilities in client environments with governance and logging.
• Help clients understand possibilities and shape the next phase with proofs of concept.
• Mentor engineers new to AI through code review and guidance.
• Maintain knowledge of models, tooling, and reusable patterns for the team.
• Move between client work, internal product work, and rapid proofs of concept as required.
• Produce clear documentation of solutions, limitations, validations, and failure modes.
