Job summary

Groundswell is seeking an AI-enabled software engineer to own capabilities end-to-end—from discovery through production. You will balance exploration with practical delivery, guiding architecture, and educating engineers in AI patterns.

You will work across client delivery, internal product work, and rapid proofs of concept, advancing the state of AI in government initiatives. You will mentor peers, define measurable success, and ensure governance, logging, and security considerations are baked

Qualifications

• 4+ years building and shipping production software.
• 1+ year hands-on experience building apps that integrate large language models, including prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, structured extraction, tool use, and agent patterns.
• Own a capability end to end, from ambiguous requirement to production.
• Experience evaluating AI system quality, including building test sets, defining metrics, and making deployment decisions based on evidence.
• Strong programming ability in Python, TypeScript, or SQL across the full application, not just the AI layer.
• Lead requirements conversations with non-technical stakeholders and translate to a technical approach.
• Explain tradeoffs between accuracy, cost, latency, and complexity to engineers and executives.
• Excellent written communication and client-facing design rationale.
• Ability to work independently through ambiguous requirements and drive delivery with minimal direction.
• Willingness to teach and develop others.

Responsibilities

• Lead requirements conversations with business and technical stakeholders, covering workflow, decision criteria, and acceptance thresholds.
• Define the technical approach and defend it; select AI pattern appropriate to the problem.
• Recommend against AI when simpler solutions exist (rules, process changes, interfaces).
• Define measurable success criteria before building (accuracy targets, human review thresholds, acceptance conditions).
• Build the complete capability, including prompts, retrieval design, tool definitions, API integration, data handling, error states, and UI.
• Build evaluation sets from real data and measure against them; iterate based on results.
• Make architecture decisions weighing quality, cost, latency, security, and authorization.
• Operationalize capabilities in client environments with governance, logging, and drift monitoring.
• Help clients understand possibilities and shape next phases with proofs of concept.
• Mentor engineers new to AI through code review and guidance.
