Job description

Join to apply for the School Bus Attendant role at La Mesa-Spring Valley School District.

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Transportation, assists students with special needs during transport to and from school and/or special activities; assists drivers in the loading, unloading, and securing of handicapped students.

An examination will be given to establish an eligibility list for the position of School Bus Attendant to fill current and future vacancies. These positions are 4 - 7 hours/day, split shift, during the school year. The eligibility list will be valid for 6 months or until exhausted.

The examination process may include one or more of the following: written exam, performance, and/or technical oral examination.

Merit Exam: TBA (by invitation only).

Examinations will be given by appointment only. Following the conclusion of the Examination process, candidates will be ranked and notified of their scores.

Essential Duties
  • Administer basic first aid and CPR as needed.
  • Assist in shaping appropriate student behavior through positive reinforcement and other strategies; redirect inappropriate student behavior according to established District policies, techniques, and procedures.
  • Assist school bus drivers in loading, unloading, and securing of handicapped students; ensure seat belts, harnesses, and wheelchair clamps are secured as required.
  • Ensure the health and safety of students by following established practices and procedures.
  • Communicate with students, teachers, and parents regarding students' special needs, bus schedules, and related concerns; assist substitute drivers as necessary.
  • Determine appropriate actions in emergency situations according to guidelines; provide basic medical care and contact emergency services when needed.
  • Maintain order and discipline among passengers; monitor and supervise students until released to authorized persons; ensure compliance with safety procedures; report safety concerns to administrators.
  • Operate equipment such as wheelchair lifts, tie downs, seat belts, harnesses, and other adaptive equipment.
  • Prepare logs and reports including route sheets, bus referrals, incident, and CPS reports.
  • Transport students with special needs using school bus or other District vehicles; transport in non-bus District vehicles if required.
Other Duties
  • Attend meetings, trainings, workshops, and perform related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience

Any combination equivalent to high school graduation or GED and experience working with individuals with disabilities or school-aged children.

Licenses and Other Requirements
  • Successful passage of the District’s proficiency test.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certifications from an authorized agency.
Knowledge Of
  • Operation of mechanical lifts, wheelchairs, seat belts, harnesses, and clamps.
  • Child development and behavior characteristics.
  • Child guidance principles for children with special needs.
  • Safe transportation practices.
  • Student behavior management strategies.
  • Applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Health and safety regulations.
Ability To
  • Assist children with special needs on buses and maintain discipline for safety.
  • Learn operation of adaptive equipment.
  • Load, unload, and secure students with special needs.
  • Maintain records and documentation.
  • Assist students during loading/unloading and seating.
  • Relate patiently and understandingly to students with special needs.
  • Establish effective working relationships.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Lift students according to guidelines.
  • Observe health and safety regulations.
Environment

Indoor, outdoor, school bus environment with potential for interruptions, weather conditions, fumes, dust, and gases.
