Join to apply for the School Bus Attendant role at La Mesa-Spring Valley School District

Job Summary & Examination Date

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Transportation, assists students with special needs during transport to and from school and/or special activities; assists drivers in the loading, unloading, and securing of handicapped students.

An examination will be given to establish an eligibility list for the position of School Bus Attendant to fill current and future vacancies. These positions are 4-7 hours/day, split shift, during the school year. The eligibility list will be valid for 6 months or until exhausted.

The examination process may include written exams, performance, and/or technical oral examinations. Merit Exam: TBA (by invitation only). Examinations will be given by appointment only. Candidates will be ranked and notified of scores after the process.

Examples of Duties
  • Administer basic first aid and CPR as needed.
  • Assist in shaping appropriate student behavior through positive reinforcement and other strategies; redirect inappropriate behavior according to district policies.
  • Assist drivers in loading, unloading, and securing students with special needs; ensure seat belts, harnesses, and wheelchair clamps are secured.
  • Ensure health and safety of students by following established practices.
  • Communicate with students, teachers, and parents regarding students' needs, bus schedules, and concerns.
  • Determine appropriate actions in emergencies; provide basic medical care and contact emergency services if necessary.
  • Maintain order and discipline among passengers; supervise students until released to authorized persons; ensure safety procedures are followed.
  • Operate adaptive equipment such as wheelchair lifts and restraints.
  • Prepare logs and reports including route sheets, incident reports, and CPS reports.
  • Transport students with special needs via bus or other district vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent, and experience working with individuals with disabilities or children. Successful passage of district proficiency test, and valid First Aid and CPR certifications.

Knowledge and Abilities
  • Operation of adaptive equipment and understanding of child development and behavior management.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and safety practices related to school transportation.
  • Ability to assist students with loading/unloading, maintain records, and communicate effectively.
Work Environment & Physical Demands

Indoor and outdoor environments, exposure to weather, fumes, and potential hazards. Physical activities include sitting, lifting, bending, and climbing stairs.
