Job description

The Personnel Commission announces an OPEN and PROMOTIONAL recruitment for the position of School Bus Attendant. This recruitment will establish an integrated eligibility list to fill current and future vacancies, active for one year or until canceled. There are currently TWO positions open in the Transportation Department. This is a 5 hour/day, 10 month position.

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the School Bus Attendant will assist in providing safe transportation for students receiving special education services and care for students while on the bus.

Requirements / Qualifications

Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and related experience working with children with special education needs is desirable.

Licenses/Certifications: Possession of a valid First Aid Certificate and satisfactory completion of CPR training is highly desirable.

Knowledge and Skills:

  1. Child guidance and motivational principles related to children receiving special education services.
  2. Methods and techniques for meeting the special needs of students and behavior issues.
  3. Health and safety regulations.
  4. Oral and written communication skills.
  5. First aid and CPR procedures.
  6. Basic record-keeping techniques.
  7. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

Abilities:

  1. Assist in providing safe transportation for students receiving special education services.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude with students with special needs.
  3. Monitor, observe, and control student behavior according to approved policies and procedures.
  4. Understand, follow, and carry out oral and written instructions.
  5. Physically lift, assist, and restrain students, as necessary.
  6. Learn to operate harnesses, tie downs, and various adaptive and assistive devices.
  7. Exercise good judgment and discretion.
  8. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  9. Observe health and safety regulations.
  10. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  11. Administer basic first aid and CPR.
  12. Communicate with diverse groups and individuals.
