Job summary

The Kids for the Future seeks an experienced Safety Manager to lead safety initiatives across its operations in commercial and civil construction, real estate development, and maritime/industrial settings in Virginia Beach.

You will partner with leaders, Project Managers, and field teams to build and maintain programs that protect employees, subcontractors, and visitors while ensuring regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of construction safety experience
• OSHA 29 CFR 1926 knowledge
• OSHA 30-hour certification required (OSHA 500 preferred)
• CSP, CHST, or similar certification preferred
• Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and continuously improve safety programs across four companies.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA standards, safety policies, contractual safety requirements, and other regulations.
• Conduct inspections, safety audits, and hazard assessments; implement corrective actions.
• Lead and document investigations of accidents, injuries, and near-misses; identify root causes and tracking of corrective actions.
• Lead safety orientations, trainings, toolbox talks, and safety meetings; ensure employees understand safety expectations.
• Monitor subcontractor safety performance and compliance; maintain accurate safety records and documentation.
• Support workers’ compensation claims, accident documentation, and return-to-work programs.

We are seeking an experienced and proactive Safety Manager to lead and oversee safety initiatives across our diverse group of companies and operations. This position will support the Miller Group, Balicore Construction, Trident Civil Construction, and Fairwinds Landing, providing safety leadership across commercial construction, heavy civil construction, real estate development, and maritime/industrial operations.

The Safety Manager will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive safety programs that protect our employees, subcontractors, visitors, and business operations. This role will work closely with company leadership, Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and field employees to ensure regulatory compliance, identify and reduce workplace hazards, and promote a consistent culture of safety and accountability across all four companies.

Because our operations span multiple industries and work environments, the ideal candidate will be comfortable working both in the office and in the field and will have the ability to adapt safety programs and practices to the specific risks and operational needs of each business.

Base Compensation: Starting at $100,000 annually plus bonus potential, a company issued vehicle, fuel card and monthly cell phone reimbursement. No travel outside of Hampton Roads required.

• Develop, implement, and continuously improve company and site-specific safety programs, policies, procedures, and best practices across all four companies.
• Ensure compliance with applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, company safety policies, contractual safety requirements, and other applicable regulations.
• Conduct regular inspections, safety audits, and hazard assessments at construction sites, facilities, and operational locations. Identify unsafe conditions or practices and work with field leadership to implement timely corrective actions.
• Lead and document workplace accident, injury, property damage, and near-miss investigations. Identify root causes, recommend corrective actions, and monitor follow-through to help prevent recurrence.
• Lead safety orientations, employee training, toolbox talks, safety meetings, and other educational initiatives to ensure employees understand safety expectations and have the resources necessary to perform their jobs safely.
• Partner closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, supervisors, and other leaders to reinforce safety expectations and address safety concerns before they result in incidents.
• Monitor subcontractor compliance with company and project-specific safety requirements, including safety performance, documentation, and corrective actions.
• Maintain accurate and timely safety records, inspection reports, incident documentation, training records, OSHA-related documentation, and other required compliance records. Assist leadership with identifying trends and opportunities for improvement.
• Partner with Human Resources and operational leadership to support workers’ compensation claims, accident documentation, transitional duty, and return-to-work programs.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or related field (preferred)

Experience in commercial and civil construction

Knowledge of fall protection, confined space, and excavation safety

Strong organizational and reporting skills

• 5+ years of construction safety experience

Strong knowledge of OSHA construction standards (29 CFR 1926)

OSHA 30-hour certification required (OSHA 500 preferred)

CSP, CHST, or similar certification preferred

Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills

Ability to work independently and in a fast-paced environment

Physical Requirements

Ability to walk, stand, and climb stairs or ladders for extended periods on active construction sites

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally

Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.)

Ability to traverse uneven terrain and navigate active job sites safely

Must be comfortable working at heights and around heavy equipment

Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toe boots

Must have sufficient visual and hearing ability to recognize hazards and communicate effectively on-site
