Job summary

Liesfeld Contractor is seeking an experienced Safety Officer to oversee safety across our active construction sites in the Greater Richmond area. You will act as a field safety presence, partnering with Project Managers, Superintendents, and crews to identify hazards and enforce OSHA standards.

The ideal candidate communicates effectively, coaches teams, and drives prevention by addressing risks before incidents occur. This full-time role requires travel among sites and a strong safety mindset.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in OH&S or related field with safety experience.
• OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification required.
• STS-C/CHST/CSP certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine jobsite safety inspections, audits, and observations; document findings and actions.
• Address unsafe conditions/behaviors and verify corrective actions are completed.
• Coach field personnel on safe work practices and OSHA requirements.
• Lead safety orientations and ongoing training for staff and subcontractors.
• Ensure permits, procedures, PPE, and controls are in place for safety-critical work.
• Investigate incidents and near-misses; document findings and corrective actions.
• Collaborate with project teams to maintain compliance with safety regulations.
• Promote safety culture and continuous improvement across projects.
• Maintain safety records and reports; travel to active sites as needed.

We are seeking an experienced Safety Officer to support safe, compliant, and productive operations across our active construction sites. This role serves as a visible field safety presence, working closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and crews to identify hazards, reinforce safe work practices, conduct training and inspections, investigate incidents, and ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety standards.

The ideal candidate will be a proactive safety professional who can effectively communicate, coach, and influence employees while identifying and addressing potential risks before they result in incidents.

Schedule

• Full-time | Monday–Saturday
• Monday–Friday: 6:00 AM–5:30 PM|Saturday: 6:00 AM–3:30 PM|Average 58+ hours per week

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct routine jobsite safety inspections, audits, and observations; document findings and corrective actions
• Identify and address unsafe conditions and behaviors and follow up to ensure corrective actions are completed
• Coach field personnel and reinforce safe work practices, company policies, and OSHA requirements
• Conduct new-hire and subcontractor safety orientations and assist with ongoing safety training
• Monitor safety-critical work and verify required permits, procedures, PPE, and controls are in place
• Investigate incidents and near misses; document findings and assist with corrective actions
• Partner with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and crews to maintain compliance with local, state, and federal safety requirements
• Promote a proactive safety culture, accountability, and continuous improvement across all projects
• Maintain accurate safety documentation, inspection records, training records, and reports
• Travel between active jobsites throughout the Greater Richmond area as needed

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Construction Safety, Safety Management, or a related field, with at least one (1) year of heavy civil construction safety experience; OR
• Safety certification such as STS-C (Safety Trained Supervisor – Construction), CHST (Construction Health and Safety Technician), or CSP (Certified Safety Professional), with at least three (3) years of heavy civil construction experience; OR
• At least five (5) years of heavy civil construction safety experience
• OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification
• Strong working knowledge of OSHA and applicable federal, state, and local construction safety requirements
• Strong communication, observation, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to coach, influence, and hold field personnel accountable for safe work practices
• Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple responsibilities, and exercise sound judgment in a fast-paced field environment
• Dependable, professional, and comfortable working directly with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and field crews
• Valid Virginia driver's license with a clean driving record
• Legally authorized to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications

• OSHA 510 and/or OSHA 500 certification
• Bilingual skills, particularly English/Spanish
• Experience conducting incident and near-miss investigations
• Experience leading safety training, orientations, and toolbox talks
• Familiarity with PTP/JHA processes, excavation and utility safety, permitting, and construction safety documentation
• Experience working in heavy civil, site development, utility, excavation, or similar construction environments

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work on active construction sites in varying weather, noise, dust, and terrain conditions
• Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, and navigate uneven ground, slopes, trenches, ladders, and stairs
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally
• Ability to visually identify hazards and read safety documentation
• Ability to wear required PPE throughout the workday
• Ability to travel between jobsites as needed
