You will protect workers from hazards and support site teams in maintaining safe work practices. Reporting to the Vice President of Risk Management, you will help coordinate safety trainings, conduct audits, and review subcontractor safety plans.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in safety or related field (or equivalent construction safety experience).
Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate company vehicles.
Ability to recognize hazardous situations and make independent safety judgments in the field.
Ability to handle confidential information professionally and in compliance with laws.

Job Overview:

Reporting to Vice President of Risk Management, the Safety Manager position provides support for the development and implementation of Hampton Roads Contracting's Safety Management Program addressing workplace and occupational health and safety risks at project sites. This position plays a key role in supporting the ongoing implementation and maintenance of the safety and health programs focused on protecting workers from physical hazards and exposures to hazardous materials. This position serves as a resource to employees, consultants, and contractors in order to ensure safe work practices in the workplace.

Description and Responsibilities:

Assist the Vice President of Risk Management, Project Management, Superintendent, General Foreman, and Foreman in providing a safe work site for HRC employees. Essential functions include but are not limited to:

Perform job site safety audits (Predominate job responsibility).
Assist project teams in investigations of safety and health incidents and near misses; identify the root cause and follow up on corrective actions.
Attend the pre-construction conference, pre-work meetings including preparatory meetings, and periodic in-progress meetings.
Prepare and review specifications and orders for the purchase of safety equipment, ensuring that proper features are present and that items conform to health and safety standards.
Assist in coordinating and conducting safety training.
Assist in injury management (i.e., Return to work).
Test workplaces for environmental hazards such as exposure to chemical and biological hazards and excessive noise.
Manage and maintain employee safety documentation.
Document non-compliance or hazardous conditions found and the remedial action taken.
Maintain storage areas, consumable supply inventories, and personal protection equipment.
Assist in maintaining all Safety and Safety Training records.
Review all safety programs and site-specific safety plans of subcontractors for completeness and applicability for the prescribed scope of work.
Attend and participate in professional group meetings/training.
Maintain awareness of new trends and developments in the fields related to the area of assignment; ensure processes, policies, and practices are interpreted and applied consistently and effectively.
Ensure compliance with all current and applicable state and federal laws, agency policies and procedures, rules, and regulations.
Other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Risk Management.
Perform duties on active construction job sites, requiring regular on-site presence and the ability to effectively operate in hazardous environments, including uneven terrain and high-risk conditions.
A valid Driver’s License is required, along with the ability to operate company vehicles safely.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8–12 hours per day).

Ability to occasionally lift and carry office materials, supplies, or equipment as needed to support daily operations.
Ability to work from elevated walking/working surfaces.
Ability to climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, steel decks, gangways, and other access points to various work locations.
Ability to maintain balance and coordination in active construction environments.
Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including but not limited to:
- Extreme heat and cold
- Rain, wind, and humidity
- Dusty or noisy conditions
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, and task specific requirements.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily on active construction sites, typically in a shipyard environment.
Exposure to moving machinery, loud noise, and construction-related hazards.
Work may occur indoors or outdoors depending on project needs.
Exposure to heavy equipment, cranes, moving machinery, and vehicle traffic.
Work may occur at heights, over or near water, and in confined or restricted spaces.
Exposure to high noise levels, dust, fumes, and airborne particles associated with construction and marine work.
Work in varying environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold, humidity, wind, and precipitation.
Surfaces may be uneven, slippery, or unstable (e.g., steel decks, scaffolding, gangways).
Work may require use of ladders, scaffolds, and temporary structures.

Experience & Qualifications:

Required

Bachelor’s degree in safety or related field from an accredited institution OR equivalent experience in a construction safety role.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate company vehicles.
Ability to recognize hazardous situations and make independent judgments in the field concerning the safety of employees.
Ability to handle confidential information professionally and in compliance with all applicable laws.
Exercise excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment that may require long hours, including weekends.
Demonstrate technical and analytical problem-solving skills.
