Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a Maintenance Worker to support road and bridge upkeep on the state highway system. Under direct supervision, you will operate trucks and light equipment, perform sign/drainage work, patch potholes, and assist in snow/ice removal, with potential extended hours.

A valid driver’s license is required and you must obtain a Class A CDL within six months; physical duties include lifting up to 50 lbs and working near traffic.

Qualifications

• There are no minimum training or experience requirements stated for this classification.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
• Physical demands include bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Walking for extended periods, rough terrain, exposure to traffic and environmental hazards.

Responsibilities

• Assist in maintenance activities for roads and bridges on the state highway system.
• Operate 5-yard dump trucks and flatbed trucks to haul materials and perform maintenance tasks.
• Use small equipment such as brush chippers, rollers, broom sweepers, and backhoes as directed.
• Install, repair, and maintain signs and sign foundations; perform vegetation management for visibility.
• Clean drainage ditches and pipes; patch potholes and perform base repairs; pave driveways.
• Flag traffic to protect workers and the public; support emergency or inclement weather operations.
• Conduct pre-trip vehicle inspections and maintain tools and equipment.
• Work extended hours or shifts as required.
