Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a maintenance worker to support the upkeep of roads and bridges. You will operate a range of equipment, assist with traffic control in work zones, and perform manual labor to repair and preserve the state highway system.

The role requires handling heavy objects, working in variable conditions, and being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts as needed. CDL Class A must be obtained within six months of placement.

Qualifications

• Must be capable of lifting heavy objects and performing manual labor.
• Possession of a valid operator's license; CDL Class A required within six months.
• Ability to work in varying weather and traffic conditions.

Responsibilities

• Operate equipment such as brine sprayer, brush chipper, forklift, pipe washer, rollers, snowplow, spreader, and tractors.
• Assist with placement of traffic control devices and setting up maintenance work zones.
• Serve as a flagger to direct and control traffic in work zones.
• Perform manual labor on roads and bridges; assist repair and preservation tasks.
• Install/repair traffic signs and pavement markings; vegetation management tasks.
• Repair potholes and base surface failures of roadways.
• Operate powered tools and hand tools for maintenance (chainsaws, weed eaters, drills, impact wrenches).
• Remove litter, debris, and dead animals; assist with after-hours emergencies as needed.
• Lift heavy objects; may work extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
