Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled equipment operator to support road maintenance in Myrtle Beach and surrounding counties. The role includes operating tandem dump trucks and backhoes, setting up traffic control, and performing related manual tasks in varying weather conditions.

Candidates must have at least 6 months of related experience or an approved equivalent, and must obtain a Class A CDL within six months.

Qualifications

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
Must have a valid operator's license; Class A CDL to be attained within six months.
Must be able to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs and working in varying weather.
May be required to work overtime, nights, and/or weekends during inclement weather or emergencies.

Responsibilities

Operates medium equipment such as tandem dump truck hauling materials and supplies to and from job sites.
Operates heavy equipment such as a backhoe in roadway surface repairs throughout Horry County.
Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up maintenance work zones according to SC Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists.
Operates hand tools such as a chain saw in cutting trees from highway right of way.
Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic, making work sites safe for workers and the traveling public.
Uses hand tools such as shovel and bush knife.
Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended work hours and/or 12-hour shifts.
May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
