Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a Maintenance Assistant to support a wide range of highway and bridge maintenance tasks on the state system. Under supervision, you may operate dump trucks, flatbeds, chippers, rollers, and other equipment, perform vegetation management, and assist with drainage and pothole repairs.

Responsibilities

• Assist in maintenance activities for roads and bridges on the state highway system.
• Operate standard motorized equipment used in construction and maintenance tasks.
• Perform manual labor such as clearing rights-of-way and patching potholes.
• Install, repair, and maintain signs and sign foundations.
• Flag traffic to protect workers and the public during road repairs.
• Assist in emergency or inclement weather operations and on-call duties.
• Conduct pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspections as required by policy.
