Job summary

Washington County Highway Department in West Bend, WI is seeking a full-time Highway Laborer to maintain and repair roads, bridges, and highways. The role requires patrolling, debris removal, mowing roadside and operating equipment for winter snow removal.

Typical starting hourly rate is about $28.90 with CDL; candidates must have a high school diploma or GED, a Wisconsin Class A CDL with air brake and N endorsement (or ability to obtain), and 2–3 years of relevant experience.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug test.
  • Two to three years of related road maintenance experience preferred.
  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin Class A CDL with air brake and “N” endorsement, or the ability to obtain within six months.

Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment for snow removal and salting under icy conditions.
  • Concrete and asphalt repairs to roads and bridge decks. Paving and shouldering of roads. Centerline/paint roads.
  • Operates a variety of equipment, such as front end loader, salt spreader, dump truck, grader, air hammer, chainsaws, etc.
  • Patrols highways and roads, removing debris and obstructions and inspecting for broken or eroded pavement, broken road markers, guardrails and snow fences.
  • Mows grass and weeds along roadside, sprays weeds, cuts bushes and trees, and cleans culverts along roadsides and rights of way, including sweeping bridges and intersections.
  • Performs roadside maintenance inspection of equipment and vehicles; inspects supplies of gas, oil, and water.
  • Erects, repairs, and paints guardrails, guardposts, markers and snow fences on a regular basis.
  • Performs general labor work involving repair, maintenance and construction of highways, bridges, etc.
  • Flags traffic on road maintenance and construction.
  • May be responsible for an assigned truck and routine preventive maintenance of the truck and/or other equipment.
  • Responsible for daily reports and work distribution on labor materials.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records on the operation of machines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including responding to an emergency event.
