Job summary

The Washington County Highway Department in Slinger, WI seeks a full-time Highway Laborer to perform maintenance, repair and patrol duties on highways, bridges and roadsides. The role reports to the Patrol Superintendent and requires operating a range of highway equipment.

Qualifications include a Wisconsin Class A CDL (manual) with air brake and N endorsement, a valid driver’s license, and 2–3 years of related experience. Expect physical, outdoor work in varying shifts with potential overtime.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
• Valid Wisconsin driver’s license with a clean driving record for the past three years.
• Possession of a valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver’s License (manual transmission) with air brake and “N” endorsement, or the ability to obtain within six months.
• Two to three years of full time recent paid work experience in the maintenance and repair of roads, including the operation of construction equipment is preferred.
• Must have the ability to perform strenuous and heavy manual duties.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug test.

Responsibilities

• Operate equipment for snow removal and salting under icy conditions including clean-up after storms.
• Concrete and asphalt repairs to roads and bridge decks. Paving and shouldering of roads. Construction of parking lots and roads. Centerline/paint roads.
• Operates a variety of equipment, such as front end loader, salt spreader, dump truck, grader, air hammer, chainsaws, etc.
• Patrols highways and roads, removing debris and obstructions and inspecting for broken or eroded pavement, broken road markers, guardrails and snow fences.
• Mows grass and weeds along roadside, sprays weeds, cuts bushes and trees, and cleans culverts along roadsides and rights of way, including sweeping bridges and intersections.
• Performs roadside maintenance inspection of equipment and vehicles; inspects supplies of gas, oil, and water.
• Erects, repairs, and paints guardrails, guardposts, markers and snow fences on a regular basis.
• Performs general labor work involving repair, maintenance and construction of highways, bridges, etc.
• Flags traffic on road maintenance and construction.
• May be responsible for an assigned truck and routine preventive maintenance of the truck and/or other equipment.
• Responsible for daily reports and work distribution on labor materials.
• Maintains accurate and complete records on the operation of machines.
• Performs other duties as assigned, including responding to an emergency event.
