Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is hiring for a road maintenance position based in Walterboro. You will operate a variety of medium equipment, assist in trenching and pipe installation, and help maintain roadways and drainage structures.

A valid Class A CDL is required within six months of placement, and extended hours or on‑call shifts may be required. Six months of related experience or an approved equivalence are accepted, and the role involves manual labor, traffic flagging,

Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Responsibilities

• Operate medium equipment such as tandem dump truck, belt loader, large roller (>4 tons), skid steer loader for hauling equipment and materials.
• Operate a motorized street sweeper to sweep and clean roads and a snow plow with sand spreader in inclement weather.
• Assist in backhoe operation for ditch cleaning and pipe installation; load materials for maintenance operations.
• Perform preventive maintenance inspections on vehicles/equipment as outlined in specs.
• Set up and flag traffic per MUTCD standards to control flow and protect workers and the public.
• Perform manual labor such as pouring concrete, laying pipes, and rebuilding drainage structures.
