Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation, Richland Maintenance, seeks an equipment operator to support road and bridge maintenance across the state highway system. You will operate a backhoe and excavator, assist with traffic control setup, and perform light carpentry to prepare forms for concrete structures.

Role requires a valid driver's license now, with CDL required within six months. Extended hours or 12-hour shifts may be needed, and you will participate in emergency weather operations

Qualifications

• One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Responsibilities

• Operate backhoe for positioning, driving and cutting slopes for construction.
• Operate excavator for maintenance of roads and bridges in the state highway system.
• Coordinate placement of traffic control devices to set up a maintenance work zone.
• Operate front-end loader for loading materials for maintenance operations.
• Perform light carpentry to build forms for concrete work.
• Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations; may involve 12-hour shifts.
• Perform preventative maintenance as outlined in the equipment operations manual.
