Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking an equipment operator for road and bridge maintenance across the state highway system. You will operate a backhoe, perform grading, form setting, and concrete work for curbs and sidewalks, and coordinate traffic control within work zones.

Responsibilities include hauling with tandem dump trucks, assisting in emergency operations, and potentially extended hours.

Qualifications

One year of related work experience or an approved equivalent.
Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license; CDL Class A required within six months of placement.
Able to lift up to 50 lbs and work in varying weather conditions.
May be required to work overtime, nights, or weekends during emergencies or hazardous weather.

Responsibilities

Operate backhoe and perform skilled manual labor for road and bridge construction, repair, and preservation on the state highway system.
Grading, setting forms, pouring/finishing concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and driveways; work on shoulders, ditches, drainage, and pavement markings.
Operate a tandem dump truck for hauling material and debris.
Coordinate placement of traffic control devices to set up a maintenance work zone per SCDOT standards.
Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations, including operating medium or heavy equipment.
May include extended working hours or 12-hour shifts.
Conduct and document pre-operation vehicle/equipment inspections.
