Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a skilled equipment operator to perform road construction, ditch cleaning, and material handling on the state highway system using a range of heavy and medium equipment.

Role requires at least 1 year of related work experience, a valid driver's license, and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within six months of placement. Extended hours or 12-hour shifts may be required and weather conditions are routine.

Qualifications

• One year of related work experience or an approved equivalent.
• Requires a valid motor vehicle operator’s license; Class A CDL within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy equipment (e.g., excavator, loader/backhoe, grader, lowboy) for road work and ditch maintenance.
• Hauls materials with tandem dump truck and supports pothole and driveway repairs.
• Assists with traffic control and maintaining safe work zones.
• Participates in emergency and inclement weather operations, including snow/ice operations.
• May require extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
