Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a maintenance operator to run heavy equipment and support concrete construction projects with a focus on safety and efficiency. You will set up work zones, operate backhoe and excavator, and perform loader tasks as part of routine highway maintenance.

The role may require extended hours, including nights or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies, and requires CDL within six months of placement.

Qualifications

• One year of related work experience or an acceptable equivalent.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required.
• Must obtain Class A CDL within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operate backhoe for positioning, slope cutting and forms for concrete structures.
• Operate excavator to support road and bridge maintenance on the state highway system.
• Coordinate placement of traffic control devices per SCDOT manuals to create safe work zones.
• Operate front-end loader to load materials for maintenance operations.
• Perform light carpentry to build forms for concrete work; assist in emergency/weather operations.
• May work extended hours or 12-hour shifts and perform preventative equipment maintenance.
