Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a heavy equipment operator for the Hot Crew responsible for maintaining roadways using a variety of equipment including backhoes, loaders, road patchers, and more. The role supports the foreman in daily safe-work practices and demands readiness for extended or 12-hour shifts when required.

Candidates must have at least 1 year of related experience, hold a valid operator's license, and obtain a Class A CDL within six months of placement.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 1 year related work experience.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• CDL Class A must be attained within 6 months of placement.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform demanding outdoor work.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment on the Hot Crew to maintain roadways (backhoe, loader, road patcher, etc.).
• Support foreman with daily safe work practices including flagging, PPE, vehicle safety, CDL inspections, hazardous materials, and waste handling.
• Operate and maintain forklifts and skid steers as needed for roadway maintenance.
• Assist with inclement weather operations and extended or 12-hour shifts when required.
