Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a maintenance worker to perform a wide range of road and bridge maintenance tasks on the state highway system. You will operate heavy equipment, patch road surfaces, install pipes, and maintain signage as part of a crew.

You must hold a valid driver's license and obtain a Class A CDL within six months. Expect outdoor work, potential long hours, and on-call rotations during inclement weather or emergencies.

Qualifications

• One year of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Class A CDL must be obtained within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance on roads and bridges on the state highway system.
• Operate heavy equipment (grader, backhoe, dozer, dump trucks, excavators) and transport materials.
• Patch roadway base and surface, clear ditches, install pipes, and construct curbs and sidewalks.
• Install and maintain signs and sign foundations; manage vegetation to keep visibility.
• Conduct safety inspections and daily preventative maintenance on equipment.
• Assist in traffic control and set up work zones per standards; participate in on-call rotations.
