Job summary

Salt Lake County is seeking a Maintenance Worker for road and canal upkeep, weed spraying, and snow removal. The role requires operating varied equipment, leading crews, and maintaining irrigation systems, with extensive physical labor and safety-focused duties.

Applicants must possess a Class A CDL with tanker endorsement, a DOT medical card, and pass drug tests. Training in flagging, defensive driving, and forklift operation is required within specified timelines.

Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of related experience, with one (1) year as a Maintenance Worker II with Salt Lake County.
  • Valid Driver’s License accepted by the State of Utah at time of hire.
  • Class A CDL with tanker endorsement at time of hire.
  • Current DOT Medical Card at time of hire.
  • Attend flagging training and certify within 60 days; recertify every two years.
  • Defensive Driving course within two weeks of hire and recertify as required by policy.
  • Forklift certification within four months (120 days) of hire.
  • Must pass mandatory drug test; subject to random testing; post-accident testing possible.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of small hand tools and equipment.
  • Conduct weed spraying ( backpack, ATV, truck mount ).
  • Mix chemicals and spray roadsides, canals, and county properties.
  • Lead crew as needed and assign work.
  • Mow, trim, edge, prune, weed, and trim trees on properties.
  • Maintain and repair irrigation systems.
  • Set up traffic signs, cones, barricades, and flag traffic.
  • Operate heavy equipment including Loader, Backhoe, Water Truck.
  • Perform basic arborist functions; crack sealing in winter.
  • Snow removal from sidewalks, parking lots, and roads.
  • Mow vacant properties for code enforcement; maintain tools and equipment.
