Job summary

Columbia is seeking a Maintenance Worker to perform labor intensive tasks including road repairs, sign installation, and drainage maintenance in the county. The role involves outdoor work, exposure to weather, and operating heavy equipment.

A high school diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license are required, with DOT flagging training preferred. No prior experience is required for basic tasks; a combination of education and work experience may be substituted.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license for the class of vehicles or equipment operated.
• Possession of or ability to pass the Georgia D.O.T. Flagging Procedures Course.
• Possession of or ability to obtain a High School Diploma or G.E.D. within first six months of employment is required.

Responsibilities

• Repairs asphalt roads including edging, water cuts, and potholes.
• Install road signs including the replacing and pointing of street markers.
• Installs and maintains drainage ditches including the placement of rip rap and the removal of obstructions from drainage culverts and storm drains.
• Removes overgrowth obstructing view of road signs and clears underbrush from shoulders of roads including, but not limited to, the spraying of chemicals around mail boxes to eliminate weeds.
• Repairs and maintains driveways.
• Pours cement used in curving, traps, and patching cracks.
• Drives and performs general maintenance on trucks used in delivering materials, etc.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
