Job summary

SoftPath Medical is seeking an experienced Emergency Department Registered Nurse traveler for rapid placement in multiple facilities within a 50-mile radius.

The role requires ED trauma and stroke care experience, appropriate certifications, and proficiency with IVs, chest tubes, and critical care drips. You will float regionally, covering weekends, with approximately 75% holiday coverage, and use EPIC for charting.

Qualifications

  • ED RN with trauma and stroke experience.
  • Certifications BLS/ACLS/PALS/NIHSS/CPI required; TNCC preferred.
  • Proficient in IV starts, chest tube and tube management.

Responsibilities

  • Provide ED nursing care across trauma/stroke cases.
  • Float regionally to multiple facilities as needed.
  • Work weekends; travel 75% of holidays; no on-call duties for travelers.
  • Operate EPIC, IV pumps, Omnicell, and monitoring equipment.

Radius rule: Traveler's permanent address must be at least 50 miles outside the home unit

Unit Information

Minimum Experience Required:

ED RN: At least 2 years of emergency department experience (Resource Team)

First-Time Travelers: Not preferred but will be considered (Resource Team)

Patient Types / Common Diagnoses
  • Trauma Level III cases such as gunshot wounds, stabbings, motor vehicle accidents, and falls
  • Stroke, heart failure, chest pain
  • Patients needing fluid resuscitation or blood products
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cardiac catheterization pre-procedure
  • Alcohol withdrawal (ETOH/CIWA), intravenous drug abuse (IVDA), mental health conditions
  • Respiratory illnesses, gastrointestinal disorders, and infections
  • Liver failure, acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD)
Patient Ratios

RN to patient ratio is up to 1:5, depending on patient acuity.

Licenses and Certifications Required

ED RN: Required certifications include BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS, CPI; TNCC is preferred

Required Skills
  • ED RN: Experience in trauma and stroke care, cardiac rhythm interpretation, and conscious sedation
  • Skilled in peripheral IV starts, chest tube management, nasogastric tube placement, and drain/tube management
  • Competent in managing critical care drips and blood administration
Department Support
  • CNA support with variable ratios
  • Receptionist/Health Unit Coordinator (HUC)
  • 24/7 Charge nurse, may or may not have patient assignments
  • IV/VAT Team
  • Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
  • Hospitalist coverage 24/7
  • Emergency Department Physicians
Technology and Equipment
  • Electronic Medical Record system: EPIC
  • IV Pumps: Alaris
  • Medication dispensing: Omnicell
  • Patient monitors: Phillips
Floating Requirements

Floating within the region is required and may include multiple facilities as needed, within scope of practice. Candidates unwilling to float should decline.

The region includes various hospitals and freestanding emergency departments in the area.

If floating mid-shift, travel time between facilities will be compensated and counted as paid time.

Orientation
  • New Employee Orientation (NEO)
  • Two days of departmental orientation
Scheduling
  • Weekend rotation every other weekend
  • No on-call duties for travelers
  • Travelers expected to work 75% of holidays
  • Request time off (RTO) can be approved up to 6 days excluding holidays; additional time off requires contract extension to meet hours
