Job description

Underwriting at Cigna: If you’re looking to use strong analytical, risk management, and portfolio management skills in a competitive, fast-paced environment, an Underwriting career at Cigna will allow you to do all this and more. Underwriters evaluate the risk of insuring a potential Cigna customer and use that information to set premium rates for insurance policies. As part of our Underwriting team, you will directly impact our business daily, protecting Cigna's sound financial position to meet our commitments.

Core Responsibilities:

1. Ability to quickly learn manual and claim experience rating models and related pricing tools.
2. Perform risk assessments and rate development for presale and inforce business for large and complex cases independently.
3. Develop strategic recommendations related to market competition, product development, and market pricing decisions.
4. Drive engagement with Sales and Producers/Clients through presale and inforce case strategies and market discussions.
5. Assist Sales as a financial consultant on case-specific issues, with an in-depth understanding of rating models, claim projections, and pricing tools.
6. Manage a complex book of business, focusing on profitable growth, persistency, and earnings.
7. Drive engagement with other Underwriting areas to optimize cross-sale opportunities.
8. Collaborate with product/pricing partners to provide input on market-level product and pricing needs.
9. Work autonomously, exercising judgment in evaluating and adapting techniques and procedures.
10. Hold calls with Sales, brokers, or clients independently.
11. Mentor less experienced underwriters, serving as a technical and strategic expert.
12. Influence underwriting best practices and lead by example.
13. Lead or contribute to complex projects focused on strategy and process improvement, comprising 10-15% of role time.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Minimum of 5 years related experience, including at least 3 years in medical underwriting.
2. Experience must be recent, within the past 5 years.
3. Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Management, Mathematics, Business, or related fields is preferred but not required.
4. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
5. Ability to manage complex cases and adapt to market changes.
6. Excellent decision-making, negotiation, and communication skills.
7. Passion for leadership in the health services industry.
8. Innovative, customer-centric, and analytical mindset.

For remote work, a broadband or fiber optic internet connection of at least 10 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload is required. The annual salary range is estimated at $86,700 - $144,500, depending on experience and location, with eligibility for an annual bonus plan.
