Job description

Underwriting at Cigna: If you’re looking to use strong analytical, risk management, and portfolio management skills in a competitive, fast-paced environment, an Underwriting career at Cigna will allow you to do all this and more. Underwriters evaluate the risk of insuring a potential Cigna customer and use that information to set premium rates for insurance policies. As part of our Underwriting team, you will directly impact our business daily, protecting Cigna’s sound financial position to meet our commitments to customers.

Core Responsibilities:

1. Ability to quickly learn manual and claim experience rating models and related pricing tools.
2. Perform risk assessments and rate development for large and complex cases independently.
3. Develop strategic recommendations related to market competition, product development, and market pricing.
4. Engage with Sales and Producers/Clients through presale and inforce case strategies and market discussions.
5. Assist Sales as a financial consultant on case-specific issues, understanding rating models, claim projections, and pricing tools.
6. Manage a complex book of business focused on profitable growth and persistency.
7. Collaborate with other Underwriting areas to optimize cross-sale opportunities.
8. Work with product/pricing teams to address market needs.
9. Operate autonomously, exercising judgment in evaluating techniques and procedures.
10. Hold calls with Sales, brokers, or clients independently.
11. Mentor less experienced underwriters, serving as a technical and strategic expert.
12. Influence underwriting practices and lead by example.
13. Lead or contribute to complex projects focusing on strategy and process improvements, comprising 10-15% of role time.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. At least 5 years of related experience, including 3 years of medical underwriting, with experience within the past 5 years.
2. Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Management, Mathematics, Business (preferred but not required).
3. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
4. Ability to manage complex cases and adapt to market changes.
5. Excellent decision-making, negotiation, verbal, and written communication skills.
6. Passion for leadership in the health service industry.
7. Innovative, customer-centric, and analytically skilled.

For remote work, internet must be via cable or fiber with speeds of at least 10Mbps download and 5Mbps upload. Salary range is $86,700 - $144,500 annually, depending on experience and location, with potential participation in an annual bonus plan.
