Job description

Underwriting at Cigna: If you’re looking to use strong analytical, risk management, and portfolio management skills in a competitive, fast-paced environment, an Underwriting career at Cigna will allow you to do all this and more. Underwriters evaluate the risk of insuring a potential Cigna customer and use that information to set premium rates for insurance policies. As part of our Underwriting team, you will directly impact our business daily, protecting Cigna's sound financial position to meet our commitments.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Quickly learn manual and claim experience rating models and related pricing tools.
  • Perform risk assessments and rate development for large, complex cases independently.
  • Develop strategic recommendations related to market competition, product development, and pricing decisions.
  • Engage with Sales and Clients through presale and inforce case strategies and market discussions.
  • Assist Sales as a financial consultant on case-specific issues with in-depth understanding of rating models and pricing tools.
  • Manage a complex book of business focused on profitable growth, persistency, and earnings.
  • Collaborate with underwriting teams to optimize cross-sale opportunities.
  • Work with product/pricing teams to provide market insights.
  • Work autonomously, exercising judgment on techniques and procedures.
  • Hold calls with Sales, brokers, or clients independently.
  • Mentor less experienced underwriters, serving as a technical and strategic expert.
  • Lead by example and influence underwriting best practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of medical underwriting experience preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Management, Mathematics, or Business preferred but not required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage complex cases in a dynamic market.
  • Excellent decision-making and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Passion for leadership in the health service industry.
  • Innovative, customer-centric, and analytical mindset.

For remote work, a broadband internet connection of at least 10Mbps download and 5Mbps upload is required. The annual salary range is $74,300 - $123,900, depending on experience and location, with eligibility for an annual bonus.
