Job summary

Rural Metro Fire Department is seeking a Revenue Cycle Authorization Specialist for an on-site role in Phoenix, AZ. The position offers full-time night shifts (Wed–Sat, 6pm–6am) with hourly compensation of $18–$20.

The specialist will manage non-emergency transport authorizations, coordinate with payors, and support billing operations. Responsibilities include reviewing transports, obtaining authorizations, and ensuring proper paperwork.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • EMT certification or medical experience preferred.
  • At least 1 year in medical billing with prior authorization.
  • Typing speed of 50 WPM or more.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basic computer functions.
  • Familiarity with Medicare/Medicaid ambulance billing preferred.
  • HIPAA, SOX and related regulations within 1 month of hire.
  • Ability to interact with the public effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance on non-emergency transports paperwork and/or authorizations.
  • Review transports to identify payor and authorization requirements.
  • Request and obtain authorizations following established processes.
  • Ensure appropriate service levels are dispatched for non-emergency transports.
  • Manage the Authorization work bin to meet payor requirements.
  • Resolve customer complaints promptly and professionally.
  • Maintain strong relationships with AMR teams, clients, payors, and regulators.

Revenue Cycle Authorization Specialist

Location: On-Site – Phoenix, AZ

Hourly Compensation: $18 - $20/hr

Work Schedule: Full Time Shift Hours - Wed, Thu, Fri, & Sat, 6pm to 6am

Position Summary

The Revenue Cycle Transport Authorization Department (TAD) Specialist is responsible for authorization management of non-emergency transports. TAD Specialists work with Communications, Operations, payors, and billing to ensure appropriate paperwork is obtained before or around the time of the patient’s transport.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work with Communications to provide guidance on non-emergency transports and required paperwork and/or authorizations.
  • Review non-emergency transports to identify appropriate payor and determine if an authorization is required.
  • Follow established processes to request and/or obtain authorizations for non-emergency transports.
  • Work with Communications to ensure adequate and appropriate levels of service are dispatched for non-emergency transports.
  • Manage Authorization work bin to ensure payor requirements are met.
  • Process customer complaints quickly by receiving, investigating, redirecting or resolving the issue.
  • Convey an attitude of intolerance for unprofessional behavior.
  • Develop and sustain excellent working relationships with AMR professionals (e.g., Operations, Business Development, IT and Finance), as well as with the Company’s clients, payors, consultants, banks and financial intermediaries and government agencies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education/Licensing/Certification: High School diploma or GED required; EMT certification/licensure or medical experience preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 1 year work experience in medical billing – prior authorization required; Minimum typing speed of 50 WPM required; Work experience with computer programs and software required; Work experience with general public preferred; Work experience in medical industry preferred.
  • Knowledge and Skills: General knowledge of medical and insurance industry terminology preferred; Knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid guidelines related to ambulance billing preferred; Knowledge of HIPAA, Sarbanes‑Oxley and other critical governmental regulations within one (1) month of hire date is required; Maintain working knowledge of various tools including but not limited to basic Microsoft Office software, QWERTY keyboard use, basic computer function required.
