Overview

Working under the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students (ODUS) and the residential college, the residential life coordinator reports to the assistant dean for student life (ADSL).

The residential life coordinator assists the ADSL in supporting and enhancing the undergraduate residential and co-curricular experience of students from all four years residing in or affiliated with that college. The primary focus of this position is to support and promote the health, safety and well-being of students in the college. By residing in the residential college and being readily available to respond to crises and urgent situations, the residential life coordinator helps to create and maintain a safe and supportive residential environment for all students. In addition, they will work to develop and implement programs and activities that foster a sense of community, well-being, and belonging among college residents, and support students in developing the skills required to navigate successfully the opportunities and challenges of living and learning within the University community.

The residential life coordinator will be expected to reside in the residential college and be available to advise students, respond to emergencies and support programs in the evenings and on weekends.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the ADSL, the residential life program coordinators will be expected to:

Safety and Well-Being

  • Respond to reports from Residential College Advisers (RCAs) and others of high-risk or crisis situations and follow-up with the dean on call and ADSL as necessary;
  • Assist the ADSL in supporting students of concern and managing residential aspects of that support;
  • Serve in a supporting on-call rotation in tandem with the campus-wide dean on call structure;
  • Be available to RCAs in the evenings and on weekends to advise on, and where necessary respond to, students of concern, community conflicts and other incidents involving community behavioral standards;
  • Coordinate incident reporting structure and consult regularly with the ADSL on incident follow-up;
  • Assist the ADSL in addressing residentially-based conduct infractions and following up with students and other college residents as necessary and appropriate;

Community Building and Programming

  • Work with RCAs to create and implement effective programming for the residential college, particularly in the areas of health, safety and well-being;
  • Support the Residential College Leadership Team (RCLT) in order to streamline communication and collaboration among the members and partner offices;
  • Assist the ADSL in supporting residential college signature programs (e.g. First Year Residential Education (FYRE) program, Live Well, Be Well);
  • Serve as advisor to the College Council, enhancing student leadership development and assisting students in creating inclusive community-building programs and activities;
  • Assist with organizing college-based orientation and move-in activities;
  • Support and assess the effectiveness of living-learning communities;
  • Provide support for summer residential programs (e.g. Freshman Scholars Institute (FSI));
  • Organize and oversee admitted student programs hosted by the college;
  • Serve as the primary liaison with other Campus Life partners to coordinate peer education activities and other programming in the college;
  • Assist with the implementation of recommendations to enhance the residential college experience.

Other Duties

  • Assist ADSL with first-year housing assignments;
  • Assist ADSLs with RCA training and selection;
  • Assist other residential college staff with programs or projects as needed;
  • Represent ODUS and the residential college on ad hoc committees, task forces or other working groups;
  • Support residential college, ODUS or Campus Life projects and responsibilities as requested (e.g. Commencement, Wintersession, protests and demonstrations, etc.)
Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Candidates for the position will be expected to have 1-3 years of post-undergraduate relevant experience or graduate work
  • Candidates must be willing to live in an apartment in the residential college and take most of their meals in their residential college dining hall

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to candidates who are interested in pursuing a career and/or graduate work in higher education, counseling, social work, or a related field.

Appointment Term and Compensation:

  • Appointment to this 12-month position is for a term of three years. Compensation includes an apartment, board contract and a salary.
