Job summary

WSP seeks a Substation Design Engineer for our Richmond, VA office. Successful applicants may work from any mutually acceptable remote location within the United States.

You will contribute to the design, development, and construction of transmission and distribution substations, focusing on protection and control systems and IEEE/NERC standards. You will analyze data, perform electrical calculations, prepare reports, and support senior engineers on project scopes from small to medium projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
• 3–5 years of post-education experience in electrical engineering designing power transmission and distribution systems.
• Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, design/build, and permitting and project work.
• Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including rehab and new design.
• Ability to coordinate with regulators and understanding requirements.
• Knowledge of engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, and compliance.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills with both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Ability to learn new techniques, manage multiple tasks, and comply with company policies.

Responsibilities

• Design substations and protection/control systems per applicable standards.
• Review third-party design documents and project plans.
• Develop electrical calculations for loads, sizing, voltage drop, grounding, and lighting.
• Prepare data and visualizations for data interpretations and reports.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure conformity with permits and specifications.
• Support development and scoping of small-to-medium projects.
