Job summary

WSP is seeking an Experienced Substation Electrical Engineer for our Richmond, VA office. You will work on planning, design, and construction support for utility transmission and distribution substations, delivering drawings, calculations, and specifications.

You will participate in concept development, design verification, and coordination with civil/structural teams, vendors, and clients while ensuring safety and quality standards are met. This role requires occasional travel.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
• 3–5 years of post-education experience in electrical engineering supporting substation design.
• Exposure to operations and project controls for reporting.
• Knowledge of IEEE/NESC and client standards used for substation design.

Responsibilities

• Collect, analyze data for substation equipment selection and procurement packages.
• Review third-party substation design deliverables and project plans.
• Create one-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and cable schedules.
• Develop GA drawings, substation layouts, and equipment arrangements in coordination with other disciplines.
• Design grounding grid systems and lightning protection per standards.
• Contribute to equipment sizing, cabling, AC/DC systems, and control house design.
• Prepare design narratives, calculation packages, sketches, and engineering reports.
