Job summary

WSP USA is seeking an Experienced Substation Electrical Engineer for our Richmond, VA office. You will support planning, design, and construction of utility substations, producing drawings, calculations, and specifications.

You will help develop GA layouts, grounding schemes, and protection & control packages while coordinating with cross-functional teams. The role requires 3–5 years post-degree experience, familiarity with IEEE/NESC standards, and proficiency with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical,

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
• 3–5 years of relevant post-education experience in electrical engineering for substation design.
• Familiarity with IEEE/NESC standards and utility/client requirements.
• Experience with substation drawings, calculations, and design reviews.
• Ability to work with cross-functional teams and adhere to safety policies.

Responsibilities

• Support planning, design, and construction for utility substations.
• Produce one-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and cable schedules.
• Develop GA drawings, substation layouts, and equipment arrangements with other disciplines.
• Design grounding grids and lightning protection per project standards.
• Perform electrical calculations: load, feeder sizing, voltage drop, and lighting.
• Review third-party deliverables and assist with RFI responses.
• Prepare design narratives, calculation packages, and engineering reports.
• Collaborate with clients, utilities, and vendors while ensuring QA/QC.
