Job summary

Nexcess is hiring several Staff Software Engineers to lead architectural direction across Platform Cloud and Products and Solutions. You will own the target architecture, coordinate migrations, and balance performance with complexity while guiding multiple teams.

This role is permanently remote with global hiring. You will collaborate with engineering managers and product teams, define migration paths, and ensure backward compatibility while shipping upgrade-safe code at scale.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering with deep PHP throughout, including modern PHP 8.x features.
• Demonstrated technical leadership across multiple teams and ships architecture decisions.
• Deep WordPress expertise and hosting platform experience.
• Excellent Linux knowledge and performance tuning abilities.
• Experience with migration/consolidation projects with rollback plans.
• Strong written communication to document decisions, RFCs, and post-incident reports.

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction for a platform area and define the target architecture.
• Own outcomes across team boundaries and drive cross-team alignment.
• Lead consolidation and migration work with backward compatibility and rollback plans.
• Make build vs buy, performance vs complexity trade-off calls.
• Automate operational work including provisioning and configuration.
• Design systems and interfaces for other teams to reuse.
• Frame unstated problems and drive parallel execution across teams.
• Mentor senior engineers to reduce individual load over time.
• Write design docs, RFCs, and post-incident reports as primary artifacts.
