Job summary

Affirm is building its own bank and seeks a Staff Software Engineer to anchor a small, AI-native team. You will own the most challenging banking-facing systems, drive technical direction, and operate with direct exposure to leadership.

You will set architecture, standards, and strategy for cloud infra, data platform, and core banking configuration while collaborating across legal, risk, and audit. You will lead end-to-end delivery, design resilient systems, and push AI-enabled tooling to improve

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with staff-level, hands-on builder credentials and a track record of owning ambiguous, high-stakes systems end-to-end through launch and operations
• Experience owning ambiguity at large scale and leading multi-quarter technical direction across surfaces beyond own projects
• Fluency with AI-assisted development tools and agentic workflows to boost code quality and velocity

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction across the bank's systems and define architecture and strategy for core surfaces
• Design, build, integrate, and operate the most complex and high-stakes components
• Enforce code review, design review, and documentation standards across a small team
• Lead AI-first initiatives and push the team to leverage AI tools
• Oversee vendor evaluation, integration, and ongoing operations of third-party platforms
• Define integration boundaries between the bank and affirm inc to ensure regulatory separation
• Partner with legal, compliance, risk, and audit to embed compliance by design
• Own reliability, observability, and disaster-recovery practices for the bank's systems
• Communicate strategy and tradeoffs to executives and non-engineering stakeholders
• Mentor engineers, contribute to hiring, and raise the bar as the team grows
